Works well but quality is questionable
By Aaron M. Pope on Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2012
I am on my second MagSafe adapter. The original which came with my MacBook failed after only 4 months. The protective covering on the thinner wire (not the included extension, which is of impeccable quality) became separated at the base of the magnetic attachment, which shortly thereafter led to a short in the wire. I, perhaps naively, purchased another MagSafe as a replacement, as I have had unpleasant experiences with third party power adapters in the past. I chose one of the like-new used items on Amazon- kind of a gamble, I'm aware- but it has worked mostly-well for about a year. I have to agree with most reviewers here that the build quality of these adapters is not on par with the price tag. For something so expensive, it should be ruggedly designed. This is a product designed to complement a laptop- something which is very-likely to be carried around in a satchel or bag on a daily basis. It is not unreasonable to assume that the power adapter will be carried along too and should be designed to withstand regular wrapping and tangling. It is clear, given the number of people here that are on a second or third adapter, that a reassessment should be in order for Apple. As stated, I have been using my replacement for about a year, and it has recently stopped working when I connect with the wire facing toward the front of my laptop. The opposite orientation still works without issue, so I've no need to replace my replacement... yet... There certainly are some positives with this particular design. -- The magnetic connecter holds well but breaks away at the proper pressure. There have been several times where the cord has been violently tripped over, lashing the cord itself but leaving the laptop happily sitting on its perch. -- When it is working properly, the dual orientation of the connector is a boon. Not only does it minimize necessary space (width) to be "plugged up," but it also gives two useful options for keeping the cord out of your way and caters to outlets in any position relative to you. (You laugh, but sometimes the extra few inches gained from not having to wrap the cord in the opposite direction can be the difference between comfort and frustration!) -- The included extension cord is wonderful. It gives a total of at least 10 feet (possibly more- I don't have the exact total length at hand). Personally, I keep this attached at all times because it is not necessary to always have the bottom / last outlet when trying to find a place to plug in the A/C brick. -- The smaller cord from the A/C adapter to the MagSafe connector is different on this replacement model than on my original. My original adapter had a plastic-like cover for the wiring. On the replacement, it is a rubbery, more flexible material that has undoubtedly helped prolong the life of this one. I would advise assuring that you purchase this style if at all possible. In sum, this thing works well when it chooses to work. However, the construction quality is a crap shoot. Should you purchase one, keep in mind that it will probably be something you replace on an annual basis if you often tote it around. 3/5: It works well when it does work, but the uncertainty of its lifespan (with consideration of the price) knocks it down a full two marks.

Don’t trust other brands

You used to be able to trust Amazon reviews, but now that fake reviews are out of hand, you really can’t anymore. My wife’s 2010 MacBook Pro’s power adapter finally broke down (8 years!). I wanted to buy a 3rd party brand because, quite simply, this is not a complex piece of machinery, it shouldn’t cost this much. One look at all of the highest reviewed products showed literally hundreds of 5 star reviews with zero verified purchases. Then the few verified purchase reviews all said “did not work, fake product”. So we’re back where we started, paying top dollar for name brand because we can’t trust any other. It’s a sad state and ruins capitalism and competition. This one worked perfectly out of the box and has been going steady for several weeks. I’m pleased with the purchase, but disappointed by the price.

This was a great order! I needed my macbook to do some animating ( macs are awesome for that,) which was for a huge class project coming up on Wednesday. My old charger was very outdated and shorted my computer a lot, so my poor macbook was collecting dust for a few weeks. Delivery: With such a major project, I was afraid the charger would not arrive in time, but it came nearly 5 days early than expected! This has given me plenty of time to really refine and touch - up for the animating and editing process. The package was " cozy," so even if the padded envelope was ran over, the charger would have been unscathed. The seller really took good care of the merchandise to make sure it was delivered safely. Quality: The charger is 100% genuine Apple, pure white and very clean. There were a few scratches and scoffs, but that's what the outside case is for; to protect the internal parts that actually matter for charging the computer. Rather the scuffs be on the outside than inside! The charger is EXCELLENT, safely and accurately juicing up my battery which is doing much better with this charger than the one that was not from Apple before. Price: This type of charger usually goes for about 80.00, so for a used 30.00 one, I can't complain about getting the same quality for 50.00 less. I'm sure with good care, it will last another year or two. Overall: I highly recommend this seller and their products! My project is coming along so well! Thanks a ton!!
I love!

I read the reviews on here that said this product is junk. Mine has worked just fine. I know that the chargers that came with our laptops all became junk quickly. The casing wore out where it connected to the laptop... eventually exposing wires. My son bought one of these for my laptop a few years ago, and my other two sons kept taking it and using it on theirs. Eventually, from all the plugging and unplugging from 3 different laptops, it stopped working too. Only two of the three laptops are now being used. I bought one of these for me about 4 or 5 months ago, and haven't had any problems with it. I just purchased another one for my son. I don't like the way it plugs in though. The magnetic connect is great, but the way it plugs in is awkward.

I'll be honest, after hearing mixed reviews about the build quality of the Apple power adapter, I was kinda hesitant hitting the buy button, but I'm glad I did. Let me also say that i'm replacing my original power adapter that came with my macbook when I purchased it at an authorized Apple store (3 yrs ago). Now ON to the review! When it came, it was shrink wrapped neatly and the product box was untouched(Shown in picture). It was like I personally bought it from the Apple store. When I opened it, the contents were neatly placed and everything was in order. It came with the adapter itself, the plug socket cable, and the Instruction booklet. When I compared the old and the new one, I noticed the newer one has smaller regulatory on it's side than the old one (included in the compere photo). I also noticed the "Safety Mark logo" has different numbers on the new one then the old one. The new on has the numbers "15" at the end of it. I concluded the new one was probably made this year than the old on that has an "11" at the end of it. The MagSafe tip is magnetic and when connected, the status light works. In Conclusion, the product is working in good condition, and is functioning normally.
Me likey.

I've had multiple Macs and have often had some issues with power cords. My most recent one that was less than 1 year old completely disconnected and was rendered totally useless. I decided to forego replacing it with the cheaper old model and decided to take a chance on this one hoping the design improved those issues. I for one, really like how it lays flat against the side and parallel to the computer as opposed to the previous model that was perpendicular. It feels much more substantial than the older model- like it won't get fatigued as easily from being bent at an odd angle. So not only does the newer design help to avoid it having to sit at such a strange angle if the cord is plugged in on the opposite side from the outlet, but the materials themselves feel stronger and more substantial. The downside is the portability factor. By being made of such stronger, more fatigue resistant materials, it doesn't wrap up as easily as the previous model does. Especially the extension that nearly everyone uses. It does not wrap around the foldable pegs at all. When I'm on the move, I generally just have to gather it up as best I can, shove it in my tote bag and count on it not staying that way. It's a little like wrestling with those joke springy snakes in a can that were once the height of practical jokes for 5 year olds. I think a velcro strap is probably the better solution.

UPDATE 1 MONTH LATER: It's fake. *DO NOT BUY* See the end of this review. -- I had to return this for a refund. ---- Original review: Well, it's not exactly exactly exactly like the unit it's replacing, but it's close. Very very close. Close enough that, to my suspicious eye, this is OEM. The similarities with my original power supply: Apple logo of the exact size embossed into the plastic in an identical way Small gray printing on two sides of the brick, formatted in the Apple style and with Apple part numbers and supplier info The magsafe adapter looks well made and solid The brick and magsafe were covered with the protective plastic sheeting that seems to be peculiar to Apple products -- it wraps around the brick and sticks to itself tidily, just like I remember from my original MacBook's packaging High quality fit and finish all the way around, no fakery that I can see Specifications on the brick printing are accurate to the requirements The tabs work exactly the same, the wire winds up around them nice and tight, and the wire clip holds it all together well. Functionally identical as far as I can tell The differences: The wire is a bit thinner The little metal part of the magsafe connecter, the rectangle that contacts the computer, looks a little shallower The labeling on the gray print is different: different manufacturer, etc. (I'm sure Apple uses various manufacturers, though, so this isn't a guarantee of non-OEM) Biggest tell: There is NO UL LISTING on the adapter. UL listing is clearly marked on my original power supply. This is an American thing, though -- it could be that this is an actual OEM supply, but intended for Canada or some other market, so doesn't have the UL listing. I'm posting a bunch of pictures of this replacement unit in detail, as well as comparing it with my old unit, so you can see for yourself. I've been ripped off with fake "OEM" parts in the past. This does not feel like that. If it IS fake, it's a masterful job, and they deserve my money for going to this kind of effort. Especially if the internals are as well-imitated as the externals. :) If something goes wrong, I'll edit this review accordingly. UPDATE 1 MONTH LATER: Welp, this one's a dud. It's now flashing from green to amber as it charges, and it only charges when the cable's connected from one direction -- wire facing the ports, the least convenient if I want to plug anything into the Displayport or USB. So... final answer: fake. Do not buy. Seth
