Great for Glasses Wearer MMO Gamers - 4 months and still great!
By Starr Duskk on Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2013
January 20144 months and still great!I initially gave this headset a 1 star review in September when I first got them. You can see the original review below. I am changing this to a 5 star review for the following reasons.Sound: Sounds fantastic through the normal cord. I listen to the game sounds while in teamspeak. Great stereo sound.Microphone: My friends say I sound better than I did with my $200 Turtle Beach wireless headphones (in teamspeak).Support: I did indeed contact the Steelseries support department and they were going to have me return them for a replacement, but since I had already switched the cord and bought an extension, I really didn't have the static problem anymore. So their support was good in that regard.Glasses Wearer: Comfort: As far as being a glasses-wearer and having these clamp on my head, that has not been an issue. They are cushy soft. I use these for gaming and teamspeak, so I can play for hours and hours and they still don't hurt my head. I have had no problems with the microphone, which is easily moved out of the way. There are no fancy buttons on it for muting and such, which I have on the turtle beaches, which I didn't like and couldn't ever find while on my head anyway. If I want to mute I just click the icon on the teamspeak or on the sound on the PC.Cord Length: I do now have the Steelseries Merc Stealth keyboard, which I love, and the headphones attach directly to the keyboard, so it doesn't matter that the cord is short. If they sold these without the Xbox audio-mixer for gaming, like GW2, WOW, etc., I think they would have had much better reviews. But sadly they threw in that faulty audio-mixer cord which you don't have to use, and everyone is reporting has static. So if you just need a great pair of gaming headphones for glasses wearers (or not), they are extremely comfortable.Audio Mixer: Yes, if you use the audio mixer, mine has static. However, I found I could purchase an extension cord for the non-audio mixer cord so it is longer and goes to my laptop. Without the audio-mixer, which I think is used with Xbox, it sounds great.September 2013 - gave it a 1 star reviewI received these headphones yesterday which I will use on my PC for gaming. Tried them out for several hours.1) The cord from the headphones to the computer is extremely short. So I attached the cord to the audio mixer and then that to the PC and it works, but there is horrible static constantly.2) My friends in teamspeak said I sound like I am talking in bubbles.3) another said I sound like a smurf.I have contacted steelseries support to see if they can assist with settings to fix this, but from all the other reviews, likely they're just built this way.I bought them because I read a review that said they are designed for "glasses wearers." I just don't see it. They are comfortable and certainly beat out my $200 Turtle Beach Bluetooth headphones that clamp on my head and go through a set of batters every 2 days. But I don't see where they have a special something or other that fits around your glasses. Maybe I misunderstood the article on that. But yes, they are comfortable. So were the Plantronics headphones I tried out, but the cord for that was also short, so I returned those. We'll see how their support department handles this and I'll post an update.

Deffective out of the box
By mog0001 on Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2011
i had heard much about the 5xb and that they were quality gaming headsets and thus it is with disappointment I write this review.starting from the beginning:Packaging: neatly packaged and easy to take everything out.Build quality: Very stylish and well made. Light plastic although felt sturdy and the double braided wire is very durable. Material cups that I don't usually like were firm and felt good. Microphone stored within L earpiece and easy to pull down. Overall a solid headset that was very comfortable.Setup: Easy setup and comes with everything needed out of the box. However the mixer did not 'click' into place and took a while to work it in. A lot of cord length so expect some clutter.Voice quality: good quality mic and could easily hear others. Livemix is really not necessary as I found the levels at which couldn't hear voices where those at which noise induced hearing loss would occur. Also it reduced game volume too much.Sound Quality: And here lies the issue as the headset was deffective out of the box.- Continuous hum in both pieces although expected in usb powered headphones. However would also be heard in quiet moments of the game.- Could not use the plug n play charger as led to a very large buzz that dominated all other sound.- Left ear would play no sound and require quite a bit of playing around with inputs and even then would often just cut out.- Often static coming from left earpiece.- Even when working did not always play sound in proper stereo and almost no directionality.- Sound stage was limited and frankly nothing spectacular - was outperformed by stock speakers on a 6yo cheap CRT tv. Couple of examples although issues in every game i tried including CodBO, BFBC2, Forza 3, fifa 11, NBA 2k11, Assassins Creed Brotherhood = Almost no mid-high tones ruining game experience in most games (I believe it to be a specific problem to my own headset given the praise elsewhere) --> Black ops: could not hear footsteps to save your life. Would almost get deafened by your own gun at levels required to hear YOUR OWN footsteps. In addition other sounds such as reloading the gun were lost --> Forza 3: Engine sounds were not as powerful as they could have been but issue was with in game music (again mainly high) distorted/not even heard even with engine sounds turned right down, in game music right up and headset on high volume.Overall I cannot recommend this based on my very biased experience (although did happen to another user).Need to organise a return and will probably not try them again. If I do I will update this post.I'd appreciate if other people who have used the 5xb can comment on whether or not they get true stereo and whether their high tones are lost or not. Cheers.
