LOVE it for ethernet only hotel rooms!! Learning to use other modes.
By Sandy Edwards on Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2016
I have had this travel router for several years and purchased one for my mother in law who travels often. I love this little thing. The hardest part of it is changing the settings. I am a iMac users and all the instructions I found after hours searching the internet are for PC. I finally found one article about change your IP address on a Mac and that was just what I needed. I thought I would tell you how I use this and how to log in from a Mac. We do not travel as often as I would like but when we do, we have four people who have at least one wifi device with them. Some hotels only have one ethernet cable for the internet. This is the best case scenario for this router because the factory default is for an Access Point. This means you plug in the ethernet cable internet and viola! You now have wifi internet in your hotel room. All the tired campers are happy and quiet before lights out. I highly suggest reading other reviews for other uses. There is where I learned some of my most useful knowledge on which mode is the right one for any given circumstance. The instructions on the website and in the box are HORRIBLE. And too technical of many of us. How to log in the change the mode on a Mac: 1) Turn OFF all wifi access. 2) plug an ethernet cable (the little one it comes with is fine) into the router and to your Mac 3) plug the power cable into the router and the wall, A blue light will turn on. 4) Click on the Apple icon on the top left of your screen 5) go to system preferences 6) Click on Networks (its a gray globe) 7) You should see your wifi is turned off and there is a connection called Ethernet. It will most likely be yellow in color. (Mine was until I made the proper adjustments - then it turned green.) 8) Click on the Ethernet 9) There are four settings. change them to read this: a) Configure IPv4: manually b) IP Address: 192.168.0.100 c) subnet mask: 255.255.255.255 d) router: 192.168.0.254 Save Then open your browser (I used Safari) and in the address line enter: 192.168.0.254. Click return. The screen should open up to the TP-Link management page for the router. You can do the Quick Set up and change the name of wifi you see when you login (SSID) and change the password to something you can remember (the default printed on the bottom is so tiny even those with great vision need a magnifying glass if the light is not perfect and who knows if this is a standard log in that every TP-Link built uses, so for added security you should change this even if you do not change the name of the wifi.) Also from here you can make other changes based upon your needs and knowledge as well as update firmware. When you are done, unplug the ethernet from your Mac and turn back on your regular wifi. If you plug the router now into your internet you will see it as an option for logging in. New week we are traveling with friends and I am going to try a new mode for the first time. It is called the Bridge mode and it will create a second wifi in our hotel room that is more secure. I never trust the security on hotel wifi so I create one with our own password for your room using this I know our information is more secure. I will add to my review to let you know if I am successful.

One should not have to be an IT expert to hook up a router
By TheNurses on Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2013
I'm no idiot, and I can find my way around a computer and setting up various peripherals without any issue, and if there is an issue I'm able to figure it out within a short amount of time by use of manuals, manufacturer website, helpdesk, etc. Ha! Not with this product. I've been trying for four days to use this as a bridge between my existing wireless network and my home printer which I cannot have hooked directly to my main wireless router. Simple, right? I read the reviews and everyone loooooves this product, right? HA! FOUR DAYS. I have called customer service twice and spent countless hours on the manufacturer's website and no help whatsoever. Firstly, I'm not trying to be cruel or have an "ugly American" attitude, but the customer service agents I spoke with were completely non-understandable. Absolutely unable to communicate with them. They didn't understand me, and I certainly didn't understand them and both times I ended up hanging up in frustration after 10+ minutes on the phone with them. Secondly, the instructions that came with the product were laughable. Can't even consider them "instructions". Ikea has more detailed instructions. But, i read the other Amazon reviews and went to the website. Slightly more helpful, and the disc that came with the router was laughably translated to English. One line said "The an access of the option for the password, what is needed for." WHAT THE EFF DOES THAT MEAN? The password and SSID are printed in -4 font on the back of the router, which leads to hours of fun as you try to decipher if that number with the smudged ink is a 5, a 6, or an S. Is that a 1, an I, or an L? Who knows? Are your settings wrong, or did you enter the wrong password & ID? Who knows?! That's part of the fun...spending hours (literally) entering every possible combination of 5, 6, and S's, L, I, i, and 1's, O and 0's...oh the hours I could have spent feeding the hungry, or training my cats, or solving the world's most pressing mathematical problems. Nope! I'm deciphering 5's and S's. Despite attempting every. single. option given (straight up router, access point, bridge, client, AP, repeater), I could never get this to work. Not even I disabled my primary wireless router and attempted to use this as the main router. I am left with the conclusion that this product doesn't work. Just plain ol doesn't work. Rebooting, and rebooting and rebooting, Dozens of IP addresses and AP address and MAC addresses entered, password after password, frustratingly non-understandable customer service and "I'd laugh if I weren't about to throw this router through the window" translated websites. Doesn't matter. The product is faulty, will be returned and I will not be ordering another one. Non-techy's beware when a large proportion of user comments come from people who preface their reviews with "I'm an IT Professional..." or "I've been working with computers since I got my first Commodore 64..", this may not be a product for normal, non techy (even if you know your way around computers and electronics) people.
