Works properly, works with NETGEAR WNDR3400 router, and gives me the speed I paid for (Time Warner Cable Customer)
By Melissa on Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2014
I bought this cable modem because I did not want to be a victim of Time Warner Cable's leased modems. This is my first time being a Time Warner Cable customer, and during installation, I handed this modem over to the cable guy (who looked a bit disappointed that I had my own modem, for some reason), who set up everything without a hitch by calling Time Warner Cable and giving them the HSC MAC ID. For those of you who want to buy this modem to replace TWC's leased modems, just call them and give them the HSC MAC ID, and they'll activate it for you (you might have to reset the modem after activation to get things going).Anyways, moving on to function and reliability, this modem is great! The speed of the internet plan I pay for is 15 Mbps (there is a difference between MB/s and Mbps, as 8 Mb = 1 MB), and after doing a speed test at speedtest.net, my ping is 9-11 ms, and my download speed ranged from 14-16 Mbps (usually 16 Mbps), which is great. So far, there hasn't been any bumps in the road, and I haven't experienced any downtime in connectivity or anything. On a somewhat related note, I also purchased a router because I wanted WiFi as well, seeing that I have tablets, smartphones, and game consoles in the house. The router I'm using is a "Factory Refurbished NETGEAR WNDR3400 N600 Wireless-N Dual Band Router" (I literally copied the title and pasted it here). Since it's refurbished, no CD came in the box, so I just connected the router to the modem, and connected the router to my computer (with an Ethernet cable, not through WiFi). Internet didn't work at first, but I assume there was some automatic setup processing somewhere (probably something to do with assigning an IP address or something) because eventually internet access returned within a few minutes. I then went to http://192.68.1.1 (default username: admin, default password: password), and set everything up, and soon had working WiFi within 15 minutes. Despite being refurbished, this router works like it's new.In short, this modem is working properly, has a stable connection to the Internet, and is giving me the speeds that I paid for (which is all that I ask for). It also works well with the "Factory Refurbished NETGEAR WNDR3400 N600 Wireless-N Dual Band Router," which is easy to set up if you have basic knowledge of setting up networks, configuring IP address, etc.Edit (11/13/14): It's been about 3 and 1/2 months since I've been using this modem, and I've had zero problems with it so far. In this span of time, I've only had to restart the modem once (internet outage), and everything was fine after that. Not sure what caused the internet to go wonky, but I highly doubt this will be anything to worry about.

Step By Step Instructions On How To Set It Up If You Use Comcast (Plus my Review!)
By Steven Wolff on Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2015
UPDATED REVIEW: It was fun while it lasted. This modem lasted me 7 months before dying. Ironically I upgraded to the SB6183 model (even though this is the 3rd modem from the same company) and I love this one so far. Here's hoping it lasts longer than 7 months. I dropped my review down to 3 stars from 5 because this is the second reliability issue with this model.______________________________________________OLD REVIEW: OMG - I'm SO GLAD I BOUGHT THIS! What I pay for is 50 Megabytes Max download. I'm clocking 125 Megabytes! I had to confirm this on multiple sites because I couldn't believe it. It's been running beautifully on multiple devices and I've got it all... Tablets, phones, PS4, two Google Chromecasts and everything is working SO MUCH BETTER. Buy This! Save $10 bucks a month in Cable Modem Fees! I'll even walk you - STEP BY STEP below!______________________________________________Installation Instructions - Step by Step For Comcast Customers:Step 1: Screw in the cable to the back of the modem - make sure it's nice and tight.Step 2: Plug your Cat5 cable (the one that looks like a phone cable) to your computer/laptop. (Even if you have a router - wait until after.)Step 3: Plug in the power supply to your modem. You'll see a bunch of lights blinking - ignore it for now.Step 4: Call Comcast at 1-800-Comcast (Press 1 for English) then Press 2 for Internet SupportStep 5: Tell them you bought a new modem and you need them to hook it up on their end (Sorry this isn't an optional step. I know I didn't want to talk to them either)Step 6: They are going to ask two questions so be prepared to answer these: Question 1: What is your MAC ID? (On the bottom of the modem is a little piece of paper with this info - or if you're lucky - a copy of the MAC ID is on your instruction manual. Read them the info. Question 2: They are going to ask what this model brand ~ tell them SB6141 (This brand you're buying on this page.)Step 7: Be patient - they will change the settings on their end. They might ask you to unplug the modem for 20 or 30 seconds after they are done updating the info on their end. The modem lights will go off and then will come on and blink. This step might take a few minutes so be patient.Step 8: They will ask you to type in a web address in your browser. (Chrome or Internet Explorer - doesn't matter.) Type in a familiar web address like Facebook.com or Comcast.com to see if it's working. IT WILL BE SLOW/LAGGY for the first few minutes. This is normal. It will speed up and should be at full speed in 45 minutes.Step 9: Visit SpeedTest.Net or SpeakEasy.net/speedtest and click on Begin Test (or choose a location) and you will see how fast you're downloading and uploading. (It helps if you know how fast you're internet speeds are supposed to be.) I know I'm supposed to have a 50 Megabit Max speed ~ however, I'm clocking 125 Megabytes! (In Easy speak - pretend your modem is a car. The maximum speed limit your car will go is 50mph. After buying this modem - it's possible to easily go 125 mph!) If you are going over the speed limit you're paying for - DON'T SAY ANYTHING to them or they might/will throttle your speeds back. (Note: Speeds do vary by location and slow down over distance)Step 10: Now you will save $10 a month for as long as you own this modem! That's $10 bucks you're not giving them!Step 11: Use that $10 bucks every month and treat yourself to something nice. :-)______________________________________________________________________IF YOU BOUGHT THE WHITE WIRELESS (TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mpbs, IP QoS, WPS Button) to go with this modem - KEEP READING: (I'll walk you through this part too.)Step 12: Okay - so we know your new modem works beautifully. Now take the Cat 5 that's plugged from your modem to your Computer/Laptop and plug the computer/laptop end into the blue slot. (There's only 1 blue slot)Step 13: Take the Cat5 that came with your router and plug it into any of the yellow slots and the other end back into your computer/laptop.Step 14: Take the tiny CD out of the envelope and pop it into your computer and hit AUTO RUN (when it pops up)Step 15: Choose the option on the right (which will be TL-WR841N) Easy SetupStep 16: Follow the instructions. It's pretty self explanatory - pick a name for your Wi-Fi signal and when you get to your WiFi password - pick something you'll remember (or write it down and put is somewhere where you'll find it) - DO NOT KEEP THE DEFAULT PASSWORD. Pick something else, anything but the default password.Step 17: It'll start configuring your router and will run a test. Just follow the instructions - it's real easy. Be patient - may take a few minutes.Step 18: Pull out your phone or tablet and click on the Wifi signal of whatever you just named it. Enter your WiFi password and if it says CONNECTED then you're done!Step 19: On your phone or tablet - download an app like SpeedTest (on Android or Apple) and test your Wifi speeds. It should be pretty fast.Step 20: Pat yourself on your back - you're done and online! Congrats! That's it! Enjoy!(PS ~ The bottom blinking light - it doesn't matter if its blue or orange. If the blinking bothers you - add a piece of electrical tape over it or put it somewhere out of sight.)
