Best Value for a Gaming Keyboard
By Ross Young on Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2014
I've had this keyboard for more than a year now. I wanted to get some sort of keyboard both to keep my laptop docked while at home and for gaming, so I wanted something that felt good for typing and gaming. This keyboard does both quite well. I really enjoy typing on this keyboard, and it alone has changed my preference from low profile keys, such as those found on my laptop, to a more standard raised design. I've never had any issues typing on the keyboard for writing papers or programming. Though the WASD keys are a different color than the rest of the keys, I don't notice the difference. The backlighting is a delight to have, because the lower brightness setting is plenty for my apartment when it's not day time or I have the lights on. The MW3 logo is not distracting at all to me. The keyboard also does well with gaming. I play mostly RTS games, with some MOBAs and Action types of games thrown in, and I've never had any problems with input no matter how quickly or frequently I use hotkeys or other commands. I've not used the programmable function/G keys as much as I thought I would, but I don't feel like that's been a loss. Some of the command programming took me a little tweaking to get right, this being my first programmable keyboard, and for some games I was not able to get things working quite how I envisioned. I'm not sure if this is a fault of ignorance on my part or if the software doesn't work as well with certain games, but I've never encountered any kind of game breaking error. I've not experimented with the Windows Key lock either, as I've never had an issue with clicking it in game in the first place. In terms of reliability, I've been using this almost daily for close to 18 months now, and I have had no issues with performance or durability. If anything, the distinction between brightness levels has actually improved. It was difficult to distinguish the low and high lighting when I started using the board, but the difference is clear now. I think that about covers all I have to say about the keyboard. Overall, I think this keyboard is an absolute steal. I got this while it was still at the $35-40 price, and it looks like a new model is out without the MW3 logo for that same price. I know that there are higher end boards available that would certainly pass this in terms of raw performance, especially with programmable keys, but if you want something that will give you a gaming boost for under $80, I can't imagine any other option as good as this one. This is most definitely the greatest technology purchase I've ever made in terms of performance and durability for price. *** Do note, of course, that this MW3 version appears to be back at its original price, so the newer version listed by Amazon would be a better value. ***

a fun keyboard to use. It's very clackly sounding and the tops of the keys feel like any membrane keyboard like what you might find in a workplace or at a college. My big complaint is that the G-keys do not assign to buttons you want them to and the Logitech Gaming Software does not offer firmware for this keyboard. It's pretty disappointing to find the #1 reason to even buy this keyboard to be almost moot. For me, I have games online so I like to assign the left-hand side of the keyboard to movements and the right hand side is on reserve for the mouse keys on my G600 (like Y, H, N, U, J, M all the way to the right to the Numpad keys). Problem is, a lot of games are so sophisticated now that having 35+ keys isn't uncommon anymore so if you do what I do to avoid using macros (like SHIFT+Key as single button assignment) you will find that for many games the G-Keys on this keyboard really only allow you to assign a keyboard key to the G-Key (like assign the H or CTRL or 4 key etc to keys G1-G6). So for me here it how it is and why I bought a gamer keyboard that didn't break the bank== 1) Movement TAB Q S E (big hands, use this instead of WSAD) 2) Thumb and pointer finger buttons for simple tasks like W to open doors or pick up items on ground and E to click accept 3) ESC to back out of menus 4) Spacebar to jump/dodge These buttons I keep the same across all games 5) Z, X, C, V, B for various simple/common actions light Z crawl/crouch, X walk/sprint, C item/character menu, V/B nightvision/flashlight in horror games, etc you get the idea 6) Various keys like G for grenade, F for first aid kit/health packs, D for detonate explosives, R for switching ammo types and 1-4 quick weapon switch. T for wait/journal/clock and that's about as far as my left hand can stretch So this already leaves nothing on the left hand side of the keyboard to assign to G-Keys!! I could go on for my G600 gaming mouse like G1-G4 Powers on Mass Effect, G5 reload, G6-G8 various item toggles (like Dark Mod), and the list goes on and before I knew it I actually only had F1-F12 to assign to the G-Keys, which don't really work for most games since F-keys are usually hard coded. It stinks there isn't some way to make those G-Keys into NEW keys that aren't already on the keyboard. Games are getting so complicated and precise for movements, items, and speed that having 1 key per action is essential. The Big Problem=== G-keys do work fine in games but they are defaulted to F1-F6 and although they may change in the Logitech Gaming Software to what you want them to be, in the games you play (so far 50 of mine) they will often still show them as F-keys. I set mine to every key you could think of but in-game they still like to appear as F-Keys. This means that when I press the corresponding F-key or the G-Key the in-game action works for both buttons. It simply duplicates the button! How retarded! Basically the G-Keys are extra keys that aren't even given a unique key and therefore do not "add" keys but simply let you move keys from one button over to the left side. Almost useless but not entirely. In the end, I'd only recommend this for its antighosting! So far that seems to be perfect. I can press 6+ keys (instead of 3) without issue but still find the keys to be limited by the game. So for Trine, the game doesn't even allow me to use F-Keys without some weird delay issue, which makes all G-Keys useless since they still show as F-Keys. Just some food for thought!!!
