Great NAS.. As long as you only use it at home
By Lakefarm on Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2013
This is a really good NAS solution. It's fast at reading, writing, and is always ready for action as soon as you need it. Aside from that, there are three big issues: First, I need access to my files from my phone and tablet when I'm on the go. The Remote Access app is terribly glitchy, but that's only part of the problem because even trying to access the drive through a web browser is never reliable. For some reason, the drive stops communicating with the internet every so often and I have to restart it to get it to be accessible when I'm outside of home. If you're buying this drive to have access to your files while you're away, please be advised. Second, it never goes to sleep. It's always running and the fan is constantly on. This creates a noise zone around the drive. It probably helps the drive stay ready at all times, but there has to be a smarter solution than simply staying on. Thirdly, there is no WebDAV option. I used to have that with my Seagate NAS and I sure do miss it a lot. I don't have the option to set it as a remote FTP server because my ISP doesn't provide me with a constant IP address. Update: Since the review above, Buffalo released a firmware update that resolved some of the issues I was having. Now I can set the drive to go to sleep at specific times and schedules (although still not automatic sleep mode). Remote access through iPhone and iPad apps has also become quite more reliable. I'm raising my rating to 4 stars. This is a great drive. Just wish it had WebDAV.

Avoid if you have a Mac!
By Michael K. on Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2013
I had a Linkstation Pro prior to this that went belly up. This looked like a newer, better choice, so I bought this as the replacement. It connects just fine.... But there are changes to the use interface that are definitely more complicated than what you had with the Linkstation pro! You almost need to be a network admin to figure out what the heck to do. OK - that is a little bit of exaggeration, but really compared to the older software, they made this unnecessarily complex. As to functionality, it will do the job, but you will spend more time with the unit up front, unless you are well verse in NAS setup. update 1/29/14 I think I am through with this particular model. I've had two... The first I was unable to get to format my external USB drive. It would look like it was doing a format, but came back as unformatted... Went to update firmware.... Appears to work... then, using their NAS Navigator s/w, it tells me it at the previous version! Every attempt afterwards says it has the newer firmware... Still cannot access the external USB. A service call gets escalated to level 2. After a few minutes of discussion - they decide to RMA me a replacement so I can get the data off the old one. Now, I have the "new" unit. It tells me a new firmware is available.... OK - so I allow it to do the update.... The unit does its thing, and NAS Navigator still reports out the older firmware! Yet on the web configuration page, it says it is current.... Now on to the USB.... This unit will not access the 2TB drive I have - just like the last one! Can't format it either. And the drive is a new Seagate. Another call to support.... Tried manually doing the firmware update through their update app.... fails.... The tech asks if I have a thumb drive to try. I plug a 1gb into the port and lo and behold - it formats it. Now - he tells me I have to reconfigure the drive to 512k sector size!!! I can't even get it to format! He tells me to "find a windows machine" and reconfigure the drive! Horrible, Horrible service. Their drive cannot even format an external USB??? What the heck! I am stuck with a horrible unit, out shipping to send the old one back, and no closer to resolving the issue. They have no Mac support. I may be done entirely with Buffalo. Too bad - the old 400 unit I had - that died - worked fine....till it crashed....
