Exactly What I Needed for a Reliable Wire
By La Bella Vita Finds on Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2025
I needed a simple and effective way to connect my laptop directly to an Ethernet cable for work, and this Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter did the job perfectly. Setup was instant—just plug it into a USB port and connect the Ethernet cable. No drivers needed for Windows, and the connection is fast and stable. I’ve noticed a big improvement in speed and reliability compared to Wi-Fi, which is essential for video calls and large file uploads. Compact, affordable, and works exactly as described. Highly recommend if your computer doesn’t have a built-in Ethernet port!

Disappointing

All plastic shell. Two primary pieces. USB piece occupies 1/8th the length of the shell, is shinier material than the rest of the shell. RJ45 piece is the remaining 7/8th of the shell. Overall the shell seems long and not really compact. The dimensions in the product listing are 7.24"L x 0.94"W x 0.64"H . The shell takes 3 3/16" of the 7.24"L. Out of the box the shell is covered in protective plastic skin, four pieces. One for each end and one to wrap around each of the two parts of the shell. The skins over the USB cable and RJ45 ends have holes to provide openings for the USB cable and RJ45 connector respectively. These skins come off easily. The skins that wrap around the two pieces of the shell were trapped in the joint between the shells. It took a lot of picking to get the plastic wrap completely cleared from the joint. The lights around the RJ45 socket are a welcome feature. What didn't work for me? I'm on various versions of Linux for all my laptops. This dongle was purchased to occasionally provide an Ethernet connection for the laptops. It would NOT pickup an IP address automatically (DHCP). With WiFi off I couldn't connect to the network just by booting with an Ethernet cable connected. However, after booting and logging into the computer, the dongle's IP address could be set manually and the laptop had normal access to the network via Ethernet at that point. In summary... -my laptops run Linux -the device would not get a DHCP address so didn't automatically connect to the network -the device's IP address could be set manually and it would connect to the network -the lights on the RJ45 port are useful -the plastic shell seems long and bulky -the protective plastic skins covering the shell were difficult to remove from the joint between the two different parts of the shell Three stars overall for the combination of apparent bulkiness, difficult to remove skins, and failure to get a DHCP addresses. This was returned and replaced by a TP-Link dongle that is smaller and, at time of purchase, on sale for $1 less. The TP-Link gets a DHCP IP address, no problem.
