IT professional - trust me, just buy the quality brand one and save yourself the headache!
By K. A. on Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2024
15 years in IT and I've seen (and fixed, and replaced, and broken) a *lot* of cables. Some things are totally fine to cheap out on, but when you're buying a multiple hundred dollar monitor, just do yourself a favor and get a quality cable. These cables are insanely high quality, very thick (which means good shielding, noise and interference protection) and come professionally packaged - some may say a bit over the top. I have the Amazon Basics brand, as well as no-name brand cables, and they really don't "feel" right. The lack of locking mechanism is a big tell if you are getting a proper "branded" cable, or an offshoot - DisplayPort is a trademark (as is HDMI), which means the manufacturer has to pay a royalty to use the brand, but that means it is compliant with the proper specifications of the cable (and the protocols that it carries). The locking latch mechanism is optional, but I've found I have a better experience with cables that lock versus cables that don't. The price is right, the quality is high, and the packaging is outstanding. What more could you ask for?

Finnicky, temperamental

I'm giving this 3 stars because it's still working, but there have been some annoying issues with it. I bought a couple of 15' HDMI cables, 15' USB 3.0 cables, and a couple of 15' DP cables because I wanted not only my VR headset to reach anywhere in the room, but also my monitors. Most of those extension cables were from Cable Matters, and have worked perfectly. This one hasn't been so smooth. For one thing, the release buttons on each end are garbage, both feel completely frozen and jammed. Press on it as hard as you can, doesn't move. Yet somehow, they still seem to work and you have to press it to release the cable, leading to sore fingers and frustration because you can't tell when you've actually released it. There are few things more irritating than a jammed button, and it apparently came from the factory this way. The other main issue is flickering that seems completely random. It didn't happen for the first month or two, but recently the monitor it's connected to (my 2nd screen) has been flickering almost completely at random. All that's changed in the meantime is moving things around. The cable would have been plugged into either the same monitor, or a third one which is identical to the 2nd (I run 2 usually, occasionally 3). The only time it's not random is when I first power up the computer, the 2nd screen flickers while the computer is booting, and then goes black when I log in. I have to either turn it off/on, or go into Windows display options, change it to "show only on 1 screen," and then change back to "extend these displays." That is happening every boot, without fail. After toggling it off/on, the 2nd screen works, but still has bouts of flickering that occur randomly. I don't have to be touching it or moving anything for it to flicker, but it also does flicker if I touch the connector to make sure it's plugged all the way in. Which, once again, is hard to be sure about because the stupid release buttons are jammed. Making things worse, I think some of the flickering was caused by display driver issues because that's fairly common with AMD, and it doesn't flicker as much since updating the drivers (except on boot up, that still happens every time). I came to write this review, and another reviewer said that swapping the direction of the cable eliminated the flickering. So I'm trying that, but this cable clearly hasn't earned more than 3 stars, and it still flickers if I just barely touch the connector on the back on the monitor. If I touch, or even gently wiggle the connector on the PC, no flickering. I have tried swapping between the identical 2nd/3rd monitors and nothing changes, so I'm fairly certain it's the cable. If the direction matters, it's not indicated. It may be that it only matters in certain scenarios, depending on the computer/monitor. So it's been annoying, but it's still working. Caveat emptor...
