Compact and Reliable Apple USB SuperDrive
By William on Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2024
Pros: • Sleek and Compact Design: The Apple USB SuperDrive boasts a minimalist design that is both sleek and compact. It easily fits into a laptop bag, making it perfect for on-the-go use. • Plug-and-Play Convenience: With no need for additional drivers or software, the SuperDrive offers true plug-and-play convenience. Simply connect it to your MacBook via USB, and it’s ready to go. • Reliable Performance: This drive is highly reliable for reading and writing CDs and DVDs. It handles a variety of media types with ease, providing consistent performance for all your media needs. • Apple Compatibility: Designed specifically for Apple products, the SuperDrive integrates seamlessly with MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and other Mac models. It matches the Apple aesthetic perfectly and functions smoothly with macOS. Cons: • Limited to USB-A: The SuperDrive uses a USB-A connector, which can be inconvenient for newer Mac models that feature only USB-C ports. An adapter is required for these models, which is an additional purchase. I wish Apple would upgrade the USB-A. • Price: The Apple USB SuperDrive is more expensive compared to other external optical drives on the market. However, its build quality and seamless integration with Apple products may justify the higher cost for many users. • No Blu-ray Support: The SuperDrive does not support Blu-ray discs, which limits its functionality for those who need to read or write Blu-ray media. ☹️ Conclusion: The Apple USB SuperDrive is a reliable and stylish solution for accessing CDs and DVDs on your Mac. Its sleek design, ease of use, and seamless integration with Apple products make it a convenient choice for those within the Apple ecosystem. While it is pricier and limited to USB-A connectivity, its performance and compatibility with macOS offer significant advantages. However, if you require Blu-ray support or have a newer Mac with only USB-C ports, you may need to consider additional accessories or alternatives. Overall, the SuperDrive is an excellent choice for users seeking a dependable and portable optical drive.

Most frustrating Apple device on the market!
By Customer of Stuff on Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2016
This is a great USB 3.0 CD drive. Just like any other USB 3.0 CD drive, but it comes with annoying flaws that were designed specifically by Apple. Yes, that is right. The flaws I see on this drive are intentional. So I was trying to install Windows using Bootcamp on a MacBook Pro that is a few years old. One of the models that still has a built in CD drive. Well the built in CD drive didn't work anymore and a CD was stuck in it that wouldn't come out no matter what I tried, so I thought hmmm okay. I will just plug in an external CD drive and do it that way since they probably will never need to use their CD drive anyways. So I plug this thing in and nothing happens. After lots of troubleshooting I looked online and learned that Apple designed this Superdrive to only work on Macs that didn't already have a built in CD drive. SERIOUSLY?!?!?! I couldn't believe it. Any other external CD drive would work regardless of what your system has internally. It's like Apple thinks i'm stupid for using their external CD drive on a laptop that already has a CD drive. Even though the internal drive is defective. So I got over that issue eventually and then I had to fix a 2 year old Lenovo laptop we had. I had my Windows 10 boot disk ready. Plopped it in the Superdrive and went into recovery mode on the Lenovo and it didn't recognize the drive. I booted into the failing windows 7 on the laptop and checked to see if it recognized it while in windows. Still nothing. Guess Apple designed this thing not to work on a non Apple computer. YAY! It could also be that this thing uses an abnormal amount of power for a USB port to handle and most computers can't handle it. I am an IT guy and I fix all sorts of brands of computers. I bought this thinking it would be the best universal tool for me when fixing computers, but it is not. It works on my new MacBook Pro 15" (2015) just fine, but doesn't work on nearly everything else. I would not buy this again. i'm starting to shy away from Apple products as they keep making dumb decisions like holding your family pictures on your computer hostage inside a software they call Photos. Similar issues with iTunes. This is off topic, but the specs of a MacBook Pro are quite inferior to other laptops out there. The only thing I like about Macs is that the operating system is stable and the machines are durable if you are willing to sacrifice your photos and music into a virtual prison cell. If you want an external CD drive I would definitely get a different brand. You can find equal performance from other USB 3.0 CD/DVD drives at a fraction of the cost of this one. Plus any other external CD drive will be pretty much universal. Only buy this one if you are an Apple fan. There is no other reason to buy this.
