DOESN'T WORK WITH WINDOWS 10 FALL CREATORS UPDATE 2017
By Afterbyrner on Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2017
UPDATE: Although the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update has been out since mid October 2017, Rosewill still has no working driver for it. I have been assured that their engineering team is working hard to update the driver (that hasn't been updated since 2014), but they have no fix on the horizon. Do not buy this card if you expect it to work with Windows 10! I would return it if I could, but now I'm stuck with a card that doesn't work with my computer. I'm going to start with my qualifications. I have worked in various areas of the tech industry for 17 years, including programming, desktop support, data center, presales and professional support. I build and repair computers as a hobby/side job. I am the person everyone I know calls with any technical issue because I solve it. I bought this card because I'm cheap and it was $5 less than the Asus ac1900 card I actually wanted. I've had a Rosewill wireless N card in my desktop for years, so I figured I couldn't go wrong. I went wrong. After installing this card, I am seeing behavior that I have NEVER seen before. The installation is like other cards, simple as can be. You plug the card into a PCIe slot, power up, install the drivers and you're on your way. That all happened as planned. I connected to my 5 GHz network and went to speedtest.net to test my speed. I hit 215 Mbps, which was almost 10x what I was getting with my N adapter. Yay. I fired up a game and immediately noticed something funny, I wasn't hearing anything. I listen to music on my PC all day, and had been listening to music prior to the install of this card, so that struck me as odd. Long story short, since installing this card I have tried every last thing I can think of including completely resetting Windows to its base install with no luck. No driver, no setting, no reinstall has been able to restore my sound. All I get is a rhythmic ticking from the speakers and occasionally the Realtec audio management console will endlessly pop up and close telling me that I've just connected something to my line out port. To make matters worse, depending on the card's mood after a reboot, the bandwith occasionally just drops to 2 Mbps and stays there until I reboot again. I thought I'd accidentally connected to a different network, but no, still on my 5 GHz network. Even when it is reporting 200+ Mbps, I now get choppy video playback when streaming video where I'd never seen that before. It's possible that something else is causing the video streaming errors, but with 16 GB RAM, an 8 core 3.5 GHz processor and an 8 GB video card I think I have the requirements to stream Last Week Tonight from YouTube covered. I'm going to finish rebuilding Windows, now that I'm locked into that joyful task, and if that doesn't work my old N card is going back in while I wait for my return to process. I get the feeling, though, that my sound wont be returning any time soon.
