Very versatile.

This is an expensive piece of equipment compared to other cable modems. However, it has all the features needed for Xfinity internet and voip service. Unlike my other cable modem it has a built in router. It also has two USB ports to allow the connection of a USB disk or a printer. It has both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wi-fi capability. Installation was relatively straight forward as fas as internet was concerned. I had to call Xfinity support to get the modem registered (MAC addresses etc.). Once that was accomplished it was up an running. The VOIP connection was more challenging as I was porting over an established number from another account. I was on the phone with a technician for about an hour before everything was working. Not the fault of the modem, but a function of Xfinity support competence. I feed my home telephone wiring with the modem and it works well. I have both wired and wireless phones and they all work. It does not work with rotary dial phones. Because the box has its own router it was relatively easy to make it work with my existing wi-fi system which are all Apple Airport boxes. I have previously had to use an Airport Extreme as a router since my old modem did not have one. Much easier to have the router built into the modem. Programming the modem is easy. You simply type in its address and use a menu driven setup. It gives you a lot of information about signal strength and signal to noise ratios. You can and should set your own passwords. I did not use the wi-fi although I tested it out. I already have several Airport boxes to cover my house from one end to the other and used the menu to disable the modem's wi-fi. In testing it worked well, but didn't have the range I needed. The USB ports are interesting. I hooked up a USB drive and followed the instructions. All my computers can see the drive and I can read from it. I still have not worked out the permissions for writing to the drive, but that's only a mater of time. Could be a useful feature to file sharing etc. There is a battery backup option available and I have one on order. It should allow my phone and internet to work even in a power failure (the phone system has a backup already). Al in all a nice piece of gear with all the features I needed.

Poor form, poor build - worst wifi gateway experience!
By Miataki on Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2017
Typically - have had great experiences with Netgear products. So when time came to purchase an Xfinity approved wifi/voice gateway, I thought I made the right choice. But after setting it up, I found the case to be otherwise. The first (yes - there was a second because I exchanged the first) router set up just fine but continually gave me signal strength issues. Devices would drop connectivity intermittently, speeds would drop randomly to 30-50% of my Comcast service and just other random error hiccups. Comcast sent technicians twice to check cabling from outside the home to inside to ensure there were no splitters and no line issues. Nothing found. Traded the first in for a second - and what do you know, same EXACT issues. Multiple devices connected to the device would just start losing connectivity. I even opened Netgear support cases thinking maybe there was some internal admin setting that I was getting wrong. They were poor support at best - asking me to change channels and RTS values and then finally, asking me to run this very expensive router in bridge mode and using a wifi router of my own on top. Which makes the whole point in paying such an expensive price for a wifi gateway a moot point! A point I made with support but did not evoke an appreciative response. All in all - after trading this router in for another made by company A***S, issues magically went away. I've been running the other brand for a few days only now but have had ZERO issues - count it - ZERO issues. This drives me to give this router the poorest rating I can. If you have multiple devices that connect to a gateway, then this is not the one for you. Until Netgear solves this issue, look elsewhere! Edit: The other brand's modem does not have as many features as this one does (separate guest network, etc) but you know what - it has yet to stumble after it's activation. At all. So again - please note: if you have multiple devices connecting to the network, then this is not the router for you!!!
