Sandisk Backs Up a Really Good External Hardrive
By David Forbes on Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2016
Every time that I think I've found the solution for an external hard drive, I always get let down hard. Usually it begins with device failure followed by an IT tech telling me that I'm SOL on data recovery... I have been especially disappointed when I've paid extra for a product to be more ruggedized (some drives are MIL-SPEC for drop, shock and vibe...) and they fail anyways. I've tried different brands and it doesn't matter. And most warranties don't extend very far into the future. The worst part is when you ask about getting your data back. Data recovery is never guaranteed and it's often twice what you paid for the device in the first place and again no guarantees... Then I bought the SanDisk Extreme SSD device. Fast data transfer, reliable, easy to protect,...And I love the form factor. Unfortunately, the USB 3 port on my device broke after eleven months. Suddenly the drive wasn't visible to my computer. Here we go again, right? So why did I rate the device 5 stars? Because for the first time in my external hard drive buying experience, I found a company that actually really supports their products. SanDisk support was terrific. When I didn't see a warranty with Amazon, I called them direct, their number showed up right at the top of Google search, and I was speaking to a live person in about a minute. I thought for sure, they would tell me the same thing, no guarantees on the data, maybe no replacement on the hardware,... Instead, they apologized for the inconvenience and informed me that they support the device for three years. They gave me an RMA number and told me no worries on the data. And then they blew my mind - they gave me the permission to open the device (who lets the customer do that?), access my data via the SATA port and back it up and delete it off of the device before sending to them for a replacement. For once, I didn't lose all of my files...at a time when I really couldn't afford to. So I have a new device, my data was saved, and for once, I actually felt supported by customer support. Kudos Sandisk!

DO NOT BUY THIS EXPENSIVE PIECE OF CR*P!
By AMN on Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2017
IF YOU NEED YOUR DATA, DO NOT BUY THIS EXPENSIVE PIECE OF CR**P! SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 1TB SDSSDEXT-1T00-G25. SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 1TB is the worst, most unstable hard drive ever. Got it next day delivery, unpacked, connected to my MAC computer and transferred all my pictures to this drive; deleted the copied files from my computer. Next day my MAC had some trouble connecting to the SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 1TB drive, but eventually, it connected and seemed to work well for the rest of the day. But this problem connecting got to be more frequent and, the next few days I learned that if I waited, sometimes it would connect --had to wait for just a few minutes to more than 1/2h for it to be recognized by my MAC (the scary part is that sometimes it would not connect). The disk would stop working and disconnect in the middle of tasks (see photos), sometimes corrupting the files and the data that I was working on. I tested and found out that the same happened when trying to connect the SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 1TB drive connect to other computers in the household and at work. Suddenly, during that same first week, the drive became inaccessible. I contacted SanDisk and they said that my SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 1TB should be returned to the factory for a new device. They said that I should open the unit connect the SSD parts to an external drive reader if I wanted to recuperate my data. The drive was unreadable. I was able to reformat using Linux and send the parts back to SanDisk. SanDisk said they are sending me a new SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 1TB -- the problem is that I don't trust their technology and this device; I lost a lot of my pictures, and I lost almost 15 days with this malfunctioning unit. Now I want my money back. All I wanted was a small fast external drive that works. Now I am stuck with my purchase (almost $400), waiting for SanDisk to replace it -- but I don't trust this product with my data. Meanwhile, I bought an amazingly reliable 2TB Silicon Power unit for half of the price of this worthless SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 1TB.
