Works Amazing and Works with my Existing Pencil Compatible Case
By EngineNo9 on Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2018
UPDATE: As of August ‘21, keyboard started having intermittent connection issues over the last few months and has finally died after about 3 years of extremely light use. I’d use it maybe once a month for the entire time I had it and it spent most of its life in my backpack. While they function great initially, these keyboards seem to be very fragile, so keep that in mind. All the stuff I said below still applies, but weigh the quality issues against the cost. Luckily I was able to find a refurbished replacement for less than $50 from a different seller. There is no way I’d pay any more than that for a replacement at this point. I just got this in today (Saturday afternoon) after ordering late Thursday night. I did a lot of competitor research – mostly because I was hoping a could find something that had solid reviews, but wasn’t so expensive. $150 for an iPad keyboard is a tough pill to swallow for a lot of people and I understand why. I considered others and thought hard about the Logitech keyboard, but didn’t really want to deal with anything connected via bluetooth. Concerns with other less expensive offerings focused heavily on unresponsive keys and missed keystrokes for those who type fast. There are other keyboards that really add a lot of bulk and weight to the setup and I didn’t want that either. Lastly, I read a lot of reviews for keyboard/cover combos that offered front/back protection, but those always seemed to have issues with the hinge breaking after a few months of use. Reviews for the iPad Smart Keyboard were mostly solid when it came to connectivity and keystroke responsiveness and to me that was something that had to be good if this was going to be worth the cost. One common complaint about the Smart Keyboard is that it doesn’t offer any protection for the back of the iPad. This is true. However, you can use the Smart Keyboard in combination with other iPad cases that will give you the back protection you need. Many other cases, such as the one I use, leave the magnetized side of the iPad open for a connection to the Smart Keyboard. I happen to use the Crystal Clear Poetic Lumos Flexible Soft Transparent Ultra-Thin Compact Resistant TPU Case because it has a holder for the Apple Pencil. So, to recap... I’m using the Smart Keyboard, which is functioning beautifully. It’s actually easier to type on this than it is on my 2016 MacBook Pro 13. The keystrokes are responsive and I’m able to type as fast as I can with any other traditional computer. The Smart Keyboard works with the case I was already using, which also has a holder for the Apple Pencil. So, I’ve got the protection I need for the back of the iPad, the pencil won’t get lost and I have the absolute best option out there for an iPad keyboard. I’m including multiple photos to show you all how well this setup works. If you want to get the same case to go with the keyboard, I previously used the exact item description so you can all search easily. I have a hard time believing anyone would be disappointed with this keyboard if it’s set up the way I’ve just described. Good luck and happy typing!

Could be so much better. Constant issues after over a year of use. Constantly stops working.

December 2018 Update. I purchased this keyboard twice. I returned the first one because it was not great. Unable to find a high quality replacement, I bought it again, and used the keyboard every day for over a year. The Apple keyboard exhibits many flaws. If you’re using it on a desk or firm flat surface, it works OK. Used anywhere else, it constantly stops typing, or a key will send a signal and enter the character repeatedly until the keyboard is removed and replaced. I became used to being frustrated with this keyboard on a constant basis. Any twist to the keyboard causes it to stop working. I finally purchased an inexpensive Chinese keyboard and have been using this for the past week. The cheaper keyboard works great and has none of the flaws, but it’s a cheap keyboard. I really miss using the Logitech Type +, which was rock solid reliable and very easy to type on. The current Logitech offering for the 10.5” Pro is horrible. Apple, please, you can do much better than this keyboard. I’ve purchased and returned a bunch of keyboards for the 10.5” Pro. The lack of a high quality keyboard is really holding back the iPad Pro. The Microsoft Surface is starting to look really good for work. I was really excited to try this keyboard, but it doesn't make the grade and is being returned. I've used and loved the Logitech Type + on an iPad Air 2 for many years. The Logitech Type + keyboard is hands down a much better keyboard than this Apple product. The Logitech is sturdy and offers a much better platform for holding the iPad in any position, and on any surface. I never felt the need to remove the Logitech. In fact, I used double stick tape to hold it in place making it a permanent fixture on my iPad. Not so with the Apple keyboard. I found that while trying to use the Apple it in a folded position, keys wind up being depressed for the pressure on the back of the keyboard. This was a major source of frustration. When the keyboard is folded away, you should not be able to accidentally depress any keys. I tried the Apple keyboard for a weekend and found myself removing it frequently, until I finally took it off altogether, something I never felt the need to do with the Logitech Type +. With the Apple keyboard, it is frustrating to type on when it is not on a solid surface such as a table, the keyboard moves around, as does the screen. My typing errors increased dramatically as a result. The Apple is compact, but unfolding it is also a chore, which negates any advantage of compactness completely. It also offers no protection for the corners or back of the iPad. For $160, I was expecting a lot more. Here's hoping somebody comes out with a slim, lightweight option similar to the Logitech Type + for the 10.5" iPad Pro.
