A fine refurbished laptop at a good price
By T. Fiero on Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2018
I've had a refurbished HP Elitebook 8470P for 2 years and like it so much I decided to buy another, slightly newer model. "Certified refurbished" fulfilled by Amazon is the way to go! The Elitebook 840 G1 I received actually does look almost new, and works great. The battery seems a little weak (only lasts a couple hours on the "better performance" setting), but that's to be expected. Generic replacements are available. The G1 is thinner and lighter than I expected--a nice surprise. Like the earlier Elitebooks it comes with a shock resistant, magnesium alloy chassis. My unit has its original Intel SATA III SSD--not as fast as the newer PCle SSD's but fast enough. With any luck it should be good for a few more years. It also came with bonus higher end features that weren't in the product description: a 1600 x 900 display (better than my 8470P's 1366 x 768 display), and a backlit keyboard. Maybe I got lucky. The Windows 10 Pro operating system is the icing on the cake. I should add that the display is not the strongest feature of these units. You don't get full high definition (FHD) resolution. Color rendition and contrast ratio could be better, but I find it acceptable. You can play with the graphics properties to see if it helps. (Right-click on desktop--Graphics Properties.) I tweaked mine slightly: Contrast 52 and Gamma 0.9. If you want a top notch, vivid display you may want to look elsewhere--and spend more $$. If I ever need to replace or upgrade the SSD or RAM modules, these components are easily accessible via the bottom plate that simply unlocks and slides off. That's good design. Unless you're a gamer you probably don't need a graphics card and blazing speed. Check the reviews and specs of HP's Elitebook 840 G1 to see if it might meet your needs. The original (2014) price of these premium business laptops was around $1200 - 1500. If you can purchase a 4 year old certified refurbished unit with an SSD in good condition for $300 -- $350, it's a good deal. For peace of mind you might consider a SquareTrade extended warranty.

Buyer beware

Sadly, I received this item scrapped up and a bit dirty. I expected some signs of usage as it was a refurbished product. However, It was advertised as a 2018. Out of curiosity I checked the serial number and it turns out it was a 2014. Needless to say, there are plenty of older refurbished laptops available for less than I paid for this one. I’m very disappointed and am in the process of returning it.
