Fun, educational and possibly very useful in the home.

The raspberry pi is a cool product - amazingly small and cheap fir what you get. This Canakit is a good entry-level kit to get you started. The power supply, case heat sinks and pre-loaded SD card are enough to get started. I have not played with the GPIO breakout board but I'm sure I'll have fun with that. It was a bit tricky to get the bottom off of the case in order to insert the RPi board, but I figured it out.

Pi is great; but the CanaKit-branded items failed quickly
By Scenic Views on Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2018
The Raspberry Pi itself (which I assume Canakit did not manufacture but gets from an authorized manufacturer) works great so far. But the items in the kit that are CanaKit-branded really suck: - The power supply. Under a Pi stress test (not overclocked; fully within the RPi's operating limits), the Pi claims 'undervoltage' when running at 100% cpu. Note this is not a fault with the Pi. When I use the Official Raspberry Pi Foundation 5V 2.5A Power Supply WHITE instead, it works FINE, for long periods of time doing intensive computation. The Canakit power supply caused undervoltage in just 10 minutes of intense computation. - The microSD card USB reader. I used it a total of 3 times before it failed. When I tried to use it in the Pi to try to clone my disk, the reader failed. 2 different SD cards in 2 different computers cannot be read anymore by this microSD card reader. And those cards and computers work just fine with other readers. Note the SD card itself (Samsung) works great. Only the CanaKit branded item failed. This is already my second order. The first had to be returned & refunded because it had liquid stains on the (supposedly new!) plastic case. I'm not returning this one (yet) even with the poor quality items because I don't want to waste the time setting up another Pi. Sigh. With my second Pi, I bought the items separately, without a kit. When you pay for quality individual items, it works much better than this 'kit'.
