Feature Rich And Clicky For $40! - EVGA Z10 Kailh Brown Keyboard
By Adil A on Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2021
Note: This has the latest firmware/software from 4/21/2021. Also, this is the "Brown" switch variant, or as others call it, the "tactile switch" (in between Super clicky and super smooth switches). Like all my reviews, scroll to the bottom for a summary. But I recommend reading through the whole thing. Let's get to the point. It's clicky and feature rich. It has amazing clicks, and sounds that feel good, but not disturbing to others, of course you could smack the keys and blow your housemate's (or others) eardrums out, but that's beside the point. Coming from a membrane keyboard, it feels like I've been missing out on stuff. The main reason I bought this board is for the features, you've probably noticed the 3-ish inch LCD screen by now, and let me tell you, it is pretty useful, you can have your keyboard profile, your date and time, along with your specific mode, all at once! This thing can also let you overclock an EVGA GPU right from the keyboard screen if you want to! It also displays FPS with Ada64. The Z10 has a brightness and volume slider, and to tell the truth they are a bit finicky, and don't always stay accurate. It has 2 side USB ports, they are limited to USB 2.0, but you should be thankful you even have them, also the board uses 2 USB ports on your PC, if you decided you won't use the side ports, I recommend not plugging in the second cable (test and see which one is for the board and which one is for the USB's). It has feet. Cool, that's standard. But you know what's not standard? Having 7 Macro keys, 5 to the left offhand side, and 2 on top off the arrow keys, plus 4 useful multimedia keys for when you are to lazy to open a minimized window or tab. It has a game mode button which disables the Win key. Pretty useless TBH. LCD screen can be Red, Blue, Green and more. Green stands out the most and has best side view in almost all conditions. Only Red backlighting, buuut, you can have some pretty stunning effects, such as explosion, which is like a ripple in a pond, except the ripple starts at a keystroke, it has fade, which is when a keystroke slowly fades to darkness, and custom lighting zones where you can have certain parts of the board light up. Build quality on the keycaps is OK, ABT and single shot (just ok-ish). But the frame quality has excellent, hefty, durable, construction. It is a full sized keyboard with the numpad, if you have a low sensitivity while you play games, you should look at a TKL or 60%. Otherwise it is good for every non-gamer. You should also know that it has a very stiff cable and is almost unbendable, but the keyboard is 3.5 pounds so it doesn't move. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Comes with a plastic wrist rest that you can adjust in 3 stages, it is better than not having one at all. Pros, Cons, and Neutral positions: Pros: ◼ Clicky and satisfying sound. ◼ 3-ish inch LCD screen, displays date/time, profile/mode, overclocks a GPU and shows FPS. ◼ 2 2.0 side USB ports, also uses 2 ports on the computer, but the USB cable can be removed if it isn't being used. ◼ 7 macro keys. ◼ 4 Multimedia keys . ◼ 3 backlight modes, and one custom mode. ◼ Amazing build quality on the frame and underside. ◼ 3 stage adjustable plastic wrist rest. Neutral: ◼ Kinda useless game mode button. ◼ Volume and brightness slider, somewhat accurate. ◼ Full sized (100% layout). Cons: ◼ Red backlighting only. ◼ Inaccurate slider/s ◼ ABT and single shot keycaps (not exactly a con but will get that greasy look over time, and PBT is just better quality plastic). ◼ Stiff cable, keyboard is 3 pounds though. Do I recommend? Totally. Just know that low sensitivity gamers may want to look elsewhere.

OK but, not much competition so no choice

The keys feel good although, despite being the same manufacturer and colour as the ones in my laptop, they have more travel but, it's OK. The keyboard backlight is good and can nice and bright but, you can always dim as required using the slider. Now for the bad. The Unleashed software is buggy as hell. It's INCREDIBLY slow to update the keyboard LCD configuration and, despite selecting "X Precision" so that it doesn't interfere with AIDA64 will frequently jump back to the non-X- Precision settings causing the LCD to flicker. No matter how many times you go through all the profiles and click apply on ALL OF THEM for X-Precision, it will randomly default back to factory. This is made worse by the E6 and E7 keys, which are also used to swap LCD profiles, being situated right above/next to the arrow keys. What's the problem? Well, I'm a touch typer and, I'm not looking at those keys when I go for an arrow 'coz the arrow keys are almost always on their own so easy to feel around. Except here, they are not alone and it is soooo easy to hit one of the E6/7 keys sending your LCD to a different profile. VERY VERY frustrating keyboard. Could have been awesome but for poor software and seriously bad placement of the 2 E6/E7 keys. Tip: If you're using AIDA64 with this keyboards LCD, make sure you unload AIDA64 when on battery power and don't have the keyboard plugged in. I don't know why but AIDA64 doesn't use any CPU/memory but it does SPANK the battery. My laptop will go from 6+hours to 2 hours. Unload AIDA64 and the time jumps back up again. I suspect AIDA64 is constantly scanning all the hardware registers and this might be using the battery. edit: Downgraded to a 1*. The software is absolute trash. The constant resetting of the profiles is infuriating. I use this keyboard on a full tower system AND a laptop and BOTH do exactly the same thing. Check out the EVGA forums (fair play, at least they don't sensor) and there is thread upon thread complaining about the software. Also, should you unplug the keyboard and plug it back in whilst the PC is booted, you will NOT get the LCD screen to recover and will require a reboot. So, not hot swap. Maybe not a concern for most but it is for me as I have to share the keyboard between the laptop/desktop and the desktop takes 7 minutes to boot as it has 9 disks in it. Do NOT buy.
