Quite the work horse - great router

I had a Buffalo WZR-1750DHPD and went for a firmware upgrade that failed (so much so I spent weeks trying to get the thing to boot). My wife suggested I just replace it, so I went with R9000 as that replacement (I have one as my main router so I knew all the goodness I was about to receive)... I bought a used one here ("renewed" is what I believe they call it) and was NOT disappointed. These routers can easily run a chroot'd version of Debian Linux (for armhf processors). I've got it running elasticsearch, postgres and mariadb. Additionally, I have it making backups off my main router a few times per day (using cron and rsync). I have had no issues with this router whatsoever. When it arrived, it looked brand new (or "crisp" as my wife calls it). It's been rock solid. Honestly these routers are awesome. The stock firmware is a port of OpenWRT - so its super easy to let it be more than a router (aka run a chroot'd Debian Linux as an example). I'm not running Plex on it as my other R9000 does that for me (as well as being a NFS/Samba server and other Linux services). The range is quite good. Tons of memory. Quad core processor. I cannot say enough great things about it (considering this is now my second one). I can't comment on tech support as I didn't need it so didn't use it. Value for money and wifi signal get 5 stars from me. I'd give more stars if there were more to give :)

I hate it

I never give one star reviews, but this router sucks at everything it does. I had the Nighthawk x6 before this, which is now 1/3 the price of this. Let's compare! Range: with the Nighthawk x6, I was able to get a connection outside my house. With the Nighthawk x10, I need an extender. Winner - Nighthawk x6 USB: the Nighthawk x6 has 1 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 port. the Nighthawk x10 has 2 USB 3.0. The Nighthawk x6 could not detect my 4HDD case thing. The Nighthawk x10 perfectly detects all 4HDDs. File sharing works perfectly on both. Winner - Nighthawk x10. Plex: the Nighthawk x6 does not have a Plex server. The Nighthawk x10 has a Plex server. While using Plex with HDDs connected to USB3.0 ports, the movies would constantly buffer making it unwatchable. Plex would frequently screw up the audio as well. Video glitches were also common. I noticed it down converted my 1080p videos to DVD quality. Winner - Nighthawk x6. Why? I can't get the hours of my life back I wasted trying to get Plex on this to work right. Wifi 802.11ac: the Nighthawk x10 supports a new wifi standard above 802.11ac called 802.11ad. And it shouldn't. It's terrible. 802.11ad in theory can transmit data at fiber speeds over wireless. Why does it suck? The range is 30 feet and there are no 802.11AD devices and there never will be. Winner: Nighthawk x6 because keeping it simple is better than adding a bad feature. Bands: Nighthawk x10 has a band for 2.4GHz and a band for 5GHz. Nighthawk x6 has a band for 2.4GHz and 2 for 5Ghz. This means the Nighthawk x6 essentially has twice the 802.11AC speeds and can support twice the number of devices. This also means far less collisions between wifi devices. Since wifi is the WHOLE POINT of this device is wifi speed/range/and number of devices, this is objective worse than a router 1/3 the cost. Conclusion: this router is terrible at the one thing it's supposed to do.
