Works great, took me just a few minutes to set up
By MC on Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2025
I replaced an older Arris modem with this one as my Xfinity speeds were increased and my old one could not keep up. So far, this one works just like the old one, only a bit faster. Since I bought my last one over 5 years ago, the price has increased dramatically, but they are still less expensive over 12 months compared to a rental modem from Xfinity. I wanted this to be plug and play, but I had to go onto my phone to provision it with the Xfinity app. Not a big issue and expected and it only took a few minutes to get it working. I had to scan the product ID (serial number?) on my phone in order to get it to communicate, but that is a far cry from the steps I had to take several years ago. As for "refurbished" this looked brand new and was probably a return from somebody who could not figure out the steps needed to get it working.

Garbage modem, get something else.

Bought the modem and worked fine for about 6 months, then it started rebooting randomly and losing connection. Then it finally keeled and no longer turned on. After working with Arris and my ISP, Arris Support sent me a replacement modem (took 2 weeks to get but that's another issue). Got the new modem and it has issues where it is not connecting to any router, but connecting a computer directly to it works fine. I check the warranty on it and it says it expired 2022! I just got it today!! Garbage device.

I bought the renewed product instead of brand new, which saved about 40% on the price. When it arrived it was in a brown cardboard box instead of the white, attractive one that you'd expect to see on a store shelf, but that was the only difference. It came with the modem, power adapter, FCC paperwork, and a quick start guide. While downloading an app to configure the device was annoying, it made for easy install - scanning a QR code on the modem brought up all the information I needed to relay to my internet provider, so setup with them once I got someone on the phone was a matter of minutes. We pay for 600 Mbps for our internet speed so this one easily provides all of that and has plenty of extra capacity for more if we decide to upgrade someday.I'm always wary of renewed products like this that have to be properly configured with outside entities, but this one went perfectly. I bought a brand new one at the same time just in case and will be returning that, because this renewed version works perfectly for me.

Works for internet but setup can be a little troublesome. So I had trouble following along in the app. You need internet access to set up. I had to reconnect my old modem to get registered. After that I connected this refurbished modem. I got as far as a reset signal was sent, waited 10 minutes. I then believed it was not working. Had 2 blue lights and 2 lights that seemed to be off or at least not green. The app will guide you along and get you connected to your internet provider via phone, that at least was a help. I got through to Spectrum and had a 2 minute wait. Be nice and explain simply, I said I bought a new modem to replace old modem. She verified my address, asked for the old mac id, then the new mac id. Next she said modem would reset which it did. At first I get one at a time up to 4 green lights, then the transmit and receive turned bright blue which makes it appear that the power and network light are off. This is what confused me. Over the next couple of hours I waited, unplugged and replugged modem a couple times, still same thing. After a search on the internet, yes i'm now connected. I found on several forums, or faq on manufacturer site that some units the lights will appear to be off. If you look through the open grill case, i can see inside that they appear green, blue, blue and green, yet on the outside I only see 2 bright blue. The lights are like flood light when they need to be accent lights. I also had trouble loging into the webpage for admin access to modem, gotta use your browser for this. I ended up doing a factory reset with paperclip into the hole on the back, after that I could get in. use admin and the last 8 digits of the serial number on bottom of modem to access. Nothing much in there I need to change, but i alays like to look around. I finished the setup in the app, which now is mostly useless. It only tells me the serial number and mac id and has a copy of spec sheet and manual. Nothing else. It would be nice if the app showed you the status (and allowed turn off of lights) and allowed you to login to the admin settings within the app instead of having to use a web browser. app is kinda lame and the setup procedure although was partially helpful not the best experience. I was excited to get a new modem with an app, but i doubt if I ever use the app again. This still is a good choice. My old modem was bought 11 years go when speed was like 20Mbps. It had room to grow up to 150MBps. Spectrum increased to 200Mbps but that old modem was only giving me 125Mbps. Only ended up costing me like 7.67 a year to own vs renting which i'm sure is more than that. I decided it was time to upgrade even though it was still working. This modem has room to allow for growth over the coming years. I'm now getting 233Mbps which is far below it's max rating of 1000Mbps. This is fine for video streaming movies and I have lots of smart lights and home control devices along with alexa for voice control. The new speed while not necessary does help. I notice some apps load data faster.
Faster download speeds, very easy set up

An upgrade from my Motorola MB7621 cable modem to get faster download speeds. I didn't have to contact my internet provider to activate it - the instructions clearly state how to do it yourself. While my download speeds increased, there were no changes in my upload speeds. I have the 1000 mbps plan and assumed the upload speeds would also improve. But when speedtest.net didn't show upload speed improvements I checked my plan with Xfinity and learned the 20 mbps upload is what's provided. This is not a problem because of the new modem, but with Xfinity. It is not a deal breaker for me, but be aware what's available in your plan with your internet provider if it is important to improve both your download and upload speeds.

This modem is refurbished, but looked brand new. Still had sticky plastic that I had to remove from parts of it. Cable company added the MAC address and it connected with no problem. Good speeds up to 1gb. Connectivity so far has been perfect. I do recommend because new these things are about $100 more.

Modem did great until a storm knocked out power. That impacted both the internet service connectors and modem. The best part is Arris replaced the bad sb8200 with an s33. A short troubleshooting call and they immediately agreed to replacement. Top notch service!

My cable guy lied to me. Spectrum advertised 600 Mbps speed, but their supplied modem couldn't get it. Their cable guy lied, claiming I was not getting the right speed because I had a TP link router. He assured me it was not their company supplied modem.Unsure but irritated for months that I wasn't getting the claimed speed, I bought this and my speed leaped from 90 Mbps to over 700. It's been working this way for weeks. I hate getting lied to like that.

Despite the convoluted instructions on the Arris Surfboard app, I managed to get it connected with all 4 lights solid green. But nothing. I had to reach a Cox human being and manually give them SN and MAC.
