The PERFECT Keyboard
By E Stroud on Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2020
I'm convinced this is the best wired keyboard under $100. It has incredible red keys that are thoroughly satisfying to press and have a quality feel to the key's weight, but require only about 20% of the full travel to recognize a keypress. So you feel a solid resistance to prevent accidental keypresses, but intentional typing is very easy. The body is much heavier than I expected, due in part to what I think is a brushed aluminum surface that doesn't scratch, and gives it a cooling effect to the touch. I thought the weight would make it awkward but it actually helps the board stay in place and feels very premium. There is a USB input in the backside which is really useful for quick swaps instead of having to reach to the PC to change the input. I use it to plug in my mouse -- oddly, to make use of this, the keyboard's USB braided cable splits into two inputs on the end, but as long as you have two open USB slots on your PC, it's no problem at all. The software is extremely easy to use and includes a "Game" mode that can toggle keys to serve as macro functions or to be disabled -- I personally never use Caps Lock, so I have fully disabled that key. It's wonderfully convenient. The only shortcoming, and I would say this is the only complaint I could reasonably give about the keyboard, is that the lighting effects and RGB customization are very limited compared to competitors like Corsair and Razer. However, a software update someday could very easily fix that. Leading up to getting this keyboard, I bought and returned a couple of others -- I tried the Steelseries Apex 3 was cheaply built and the 5's blue keys were monumentally loud (otherwise an amazing keyboard) and the 7 was too large a jump in price to justify basically just quieter keys, and the Razer I tried had an awful keypress squeak. Somehow this dodged my searches until I was about to give up and buy something else I knew I wouldn't like. This one is well-built, looks and feels beautiful, is packed with features, does exactly what I want and expect... I just love it!

Key is going out after a little over one month.

I am a fan of Logitech, generally speaking, but I have had some bad luck with keyboards. I previously had the G810 Orion keyboard, and it lasted me a few years. after the first year and a half or so, the blue in the LEDs started to die on random keys. then after the 3 years, keys started to go bad and repeat, forcing me to buy a new keyboard. I bought this G512 keyboard on Feb 21 2020, it's now April 2 2020, and the S key is already starting to repeat itself intermittently... Only a matter of time before it goes. I would like to know if individual keys can be replaced and where I would get one? Much rather do that than try to hassle with sending this keyboard back in the middle of this whole lockdown situation. But I must have a functioning keyboard for work purposes. For potential buyers, it seems keyboards are as much a gamble as ordering a hard drive. I still love Logitech but come on guys... quality control. And Logitech, if you are reading this, please reach out to me with some support. Thank you! UPDATE: I contacted Logitech support, and they sent me a replacement keyboard... and the replacement, has the same issue. The keys will randomly repeat. You would think this would be only when they are going out, but this is not the case. I have found that when a key starts repeating, I can tap on that key aggressively several times, and then it will stop repeating and work normally. On any given day, a different key will act up like this. Not always the same keys, so this tells me there is a flaw in the switches as a whole, and not just an isolated defect. Logitech made their own switches instead of relying on cherry switches, likely to save money, and they simply have not got their design right. There is nothing I can do now, since I know getting a replacement will change nothing. I will use this keyboard as long as I can stand it, but will eventually move away from Logitech unfortunately. Great brand, great products, now failing to deliver the quality they were known for.
