A great budget wireless keyboard option
By Josh Perez on Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2022
This keyboard is a great option for somebody looking for an affordable wireless mechanical keyboard. The aluminum frame feels excellent, and I haven't had any issues with pairing or bluetooth connectivity. It comes configured for MacOS, but includes a key puller and key caps to convert the cmd and option keys to the windows and alt keys. It also comes with a very nice right angle USB-C cable for charging or using the keyboard corded. When I unboxed my keyboard, there were a few key caps loose, but that's not abnormal for mechanical keyboards. The key caps simply push back on. The layout is very compact, with the del, pgup, pgdn, home, and end keys being in a column on the very right, but the keys are used infrequently enough that it's probably not significant for most users (and I actually find having the end key placement more convenient). The arrow keys are situated in the bottom right and the up arrow shares space with where the shift key would normally be - meaning the right shift key is a non standard size. I was concerned about this initially, but found that I never had any trouble using that shift key. My pinky always landed on the left side of the key normally. The function buttons work correctly as well - While holding the fn key: F1 and F2 are computer brightness down and up; F3 is expose view on mac and task view on windows; F4 is app view on mac and simply opens windows explorer on windows oddly; then F7 F8 and F9 are reverse, play/pause, and fast forward; and finally F10 F11 and F12 are mute, volume down, and volume up. The other versions of the K2 keyboard are backlit, but I opted for this one because of the color scheme, slightly better battery life (due to no backlighting), and for the price. You can get this keyboard for slightly cheaper with a plastic frame, but the aluminum frame feels very premium and gives the keyboard a little bit of weight that feels very good.

Decent keyboard, poor switch choice
By Alec on Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2024
I initially reviewed the Keychron K2 before diving into the custom keyboard world. Some of my opinions have changed since learning more about switches and keyboard tuning. Here is my updated review. I bought the Keychron K2 to have a bluetooth mechanical keyboard to use with multiple devices. I opted for clicky blue switches as I had never tried them before. I use this keyboard in my home office where sound level doesn’t matter. Be aware that it is very loud and will probably not be suitable for the workplace, library, or other shared area. My main complaint about this keyboard is Keychron’s blue switches. These blue switches are basically the same as a Gateron blue. They use a sort of spring-loaded plastic jacket that snaps downward on the keypress to generate the click sound. Compared to other options (Gateron Melodic, Kailh Box Glazed Green, etc.), Keychron/Gateron blue switches have a very sloppy sound. The overall sound of this keyboard suffers due to the choice of low-end blue switches. Furthermore, this keyboard is not hot-swappable, so you can’t install nicer switches to solve this problem. My other concern is that the stabilizers need some lubrication and tuning. This might be expected on an entry-level keyboard. The spacebar especially is very harsh. Those criticisms aside, the Keychron K2 has some great features that I truly love. I really like the aluminum frame. It is sturdy and always slightly cold to the touch, which feels more premium than a plastic case. I'm a fan of the colorway too. Overall, it has a clean appearance without any gaudy, gamer-esque design elements. And if the red escape key isn't your thing, it comes with a gray one that you can swap. The Bluetooth connectivity has worked perfectly so far. I have it paired with three different devices and it switches seamlessly between them by pressing fn+1, 2, or 3. I have it switched to Windows compatibility mode and it works on my PC, iPhone, and Raspberry Pi. Consider that this keyboard is pretty tall. I use it with a wrist rest to get my wrists into a more neutral position. The Keychron K2 offers some nice features along with the popular Keychron brand name. I’m quite sure I would have been happier long-term with red or brown switches in this particular model. A clicky version is still viable, but I would recommend that they spec it with nicer switches, such as a Gateron Melodic. As this spec falls short on the switch front, it feels impossible to recommend at the current price ($80) and still difficult to recommend even if it was 50% off. There are really nice entry-level hot-swappable mechanical keyboards out there for $50-70 that I would recommend before this keyboard to anyone except dedicated Keychron fans.
