Usable as a boot disk
By Art C. on Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2024
This device uses the USB-over-SCSI protocol, not the older Bulk Storage profile used by most inexpensive sticks. Therefore if you plug it into a fast enough USB port, it can run at roughly the same speed as a SATA SSD. I have an entire bootable Linux image on mine, and I use it to dual-boot a laptop to a completely different "personality" than the one on the main disk.

Fast, but only with short/small sporadic transfers.

Pros: Capacity is authentic, Short bursts have good speed. Cons: Speed rapidly deteriorates after 15-25GB of data transferred, so it loses much of the functionality during sustained transfers. This means that if you're paying the premium specifically for speed with the intention of sustained transfers or as a portable OS, this may not offer a good value. You also need to have USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports in order to have compatibility to take full advantage of the speed, but you can get by with 3.1 Gen 1 ports if you're willing to only lose a small fraction of speed.
