Add WiFi 6E’s 6GHz band to your existing mesh network
By John on Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2024
BACKGROUND: I have three Amplifi Alien routers in a mesh configuration. One on each floor of my townhouse. I was a little upset when they added the new uncongested 6GHz band as an extension to the existing WiFi 6 specification right after purchasing my three routers. The Aliens will do a single 160MHz wide channel on the 5GHz band (allowing for 1Gb/s speeds), but only by using DFS channels. Unfortunately I keep getting booted off (because of either the airport or a local weather station) and dumbed down to a congested 80MHz channel. So I can't keep my 1Gb/s speeds for long. The max speed I can get on my phone is 800Mbit/s over the 5GHz band and that is standing right in front of one of the routers. But I love my Aliens and did not want to part with them just yet. NEED: I currently only have one device (iPhone 16 Pro Max) right now that can take advantage of the WiFi 6E and the 6GHz band. I may be adding another iPad soon that will also have WiFi 6E/7. So I was looking for something that added the 6GHz band without adding more 2.4GHz and 5GHz band channels and the traffic that would interfere with my existing mesh setup. Most 6E routers do not allow you to turn off their 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. This ARRIS filled the need perfectly. SETUP: I didn't use the Surfboard Central APP for setup since it wanted me to create yet another account with password. I just plugged in the ARRIS, waited for my Alien Router to assign an IP address, found the address withing the Alien router's APP, and then typed that assigned address into a web browser. From there I could rename the default SSID and make other changes. RESULT: I now have 1Gbit/s speeds on my phone anywhere in my house (only limited by the 1Gig ethernet ports on my original router and switches). OTHER THOUGHTS: I wish more companies would consider making access points with only the 6GHz band. This should hold me over until they work out all the kinks of WiFi 7 and Apple truly implements WiFi 7 with 320MHz wide channels instead of just 160MHz into its products. Other phone manufacturers are already there. Sigh.
