Solid, but update your microcode through BIOS!
By Dani L on Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2024
I purchased this in late July 2024, shortly before the August 0x129 microcode update band-aid fixed the notorious voltage spike issues that were occurring with 13th and 14th gen Intel CPUs. Ever since updating to 0x12B (September update), I have found that I still need to set a VCore limit. But that's the only change I've had to make instead of all the various curvature and threshold adjustments prior to Intel's releases to fix this heinous problem. That said, the motherboard's BIOS UI allowed me to do this without much difficulty. If you inform yourself, through videos (find ones dated September 2024 or later - these have the latest "fix" microcode updates for the voltage problem) discussion board posts, or chat groups. The performance has been nothing short of expected. I upgraded from a DDR3 system with 1440K to now a DDR5 with 14700K. The only issues with instability were from my keeping some severe undervolting settings AFTER a microcode update. After realizing this and loosening the restrictions, I have been met with a consistently smooth performance and regulated voltage even with various processing demands I have thrown at this machine. It is December 2024 and I'm satisfied with my purchase although I was cautious about my decision to stick with Intel through this generation. I will still be monitoring the performance and hopefully I am not giving a 12 month edit of "well it's fried" through my phone, but we'll see. Also I am a big fan of the m.2 slots having the EZ-Latch system! My old board required screws. I missed a whole generation of board design so all of these convenience and thermal improvements have impressed me.

Gigabyte has gone down the tubes
By IronSights30 on Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025
For nearly 30 years I've built PCs with Gigabyte motherboards and always found them to be great. While I have used other vendor's boards as well, I've never had a problem. I'd read that the company has been going downhill for the last couple of years, but I guess I didn't believe it. When the time came to upgrade from a very disappointing MSI z690 board I decided to try this "premium" Z790 from Gigabyte mostly because it was on sale for half of its original MSRP. The board I received was defective and was damaged (dropped on the corner near where the front panel wires connect) probably at the factory, although the box was damaged too, so it's hard to say. The damage may or may not have been the cause of my particular failure though. While the PCB was chipped a tiny bit and bent in the corner, I didn't see any traces in the PCB that would have been compromised. I got error 94 on the diag and the POST stopped with the VGA LED lit. I tried two known-working video cards and even tried one in a lower PCI-E slot to see if that would make a difference which it did not. This was after stripping the board of everything but the RAM and video card to eliminate any potential issues. Stuff happens and I think I just got a bad sample, or maybe the damage was bad enough to cause my issue - don't know. But the real problem I had and the reason for this one-star review is that I tried to reach out to Gigabyte for support, figuring I'd at least try that before returning the unit. I found that they no longer offer phone support, and their chat feature on the website no longer works. It looks as though (and verified through multiple postings on Reddit) that Gigabyte has apparently fired almost all of their tech support staff. I'd even seen where they (if you can actually get through to support) they will tell you to go to your reseller and request an RMA. This is a real shame since they were a once pretty great company. I will just have to spend my money elsewhere, since I expect support to be available on the very rare occasion I need it.
